In 1981, the movie Fear No Evil was filmed at several sites in and around Boldt Castle, marking the only time the castle has made an appearance in cinema.

Boldt Castle is only open to the public during the day; there are no facilities for overnight accommodations.

But no one has ever lived in it, even though it's been standing for over a century. And as it turns out, there's a heartbreaking reason for that. Back in 1900, an American hotelier named George Boldt was determined to build a dreamy castle for his beloved wife Louise.

Construction of the castle began in 1900 and cost an estimated $2.5 million. That's $65 million in 2020 adjusted dollars, according to the US Inflation Calculator.

The five-acre island is fully handicapped accessible, has complete restroom facilities, extensive docking for private boats, several picnic areas, a gift shop, and a food and beverage concession.

George was 26, and it wasn't long before love blossomed between them. They were married on June 14, 1877, and had two children.

It's believed she had been diagnosed with tuberculosis and was placed under the constant care of a doctor. Construction continued and the castle was on schedule to be completed on the date of the Boldt's anniversary, June 14, 1904. But Louise's health continued to falter and she passed away on January 7, 1904.

Boldt died on December 5, 1916, in Manhattan, New York City of a heart attack. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, New York.

Boldt Castle, a premier attraction in the 1000 Islands International Region, announced that a 2014/2015 independent study estimates it to generate over $46 million, in today's dollars, annually in regional economic activity. Additionally, the historic site generates over 600 jobs in the regional economy.

Boldt's Wellesley Island Farms while 300 workers including stonemasons, carpenters, and artists fashioned the six story, 120 room castle, complete with tunnels, a powerhouse, Italian gardens, a drawbridge, alster tower (children's playhouse) and a dove cote. Not a single detail or expense was spared.

In January 1904, tragedy struck. Boldt telegraphed the island and commanded the workers to immediately “stop all construction.” Louise had died suddenly. A broken hearted Boldt could not imagine his dream castle without his beloved.
