Hollywood’s a dazzling place but every moon has a dark side. Now in the twisted dark corridors of Hollywood, there’s this bone-chilling lore stemming out of old scripts, but way scarier because it’s real. You know the ‘Poltergeist’ series, right? Classic horror, the kind that gives you goosebumps just thinking about it. It’s not just the stuff on screen that’s got people freaked out, it’s what’s been happening behind it that’s winning all the thrill money.
So the story of a family playing house on top of a cemetery pissed some unholy spirits off and the script made their life hell. That’s the plot of the 1982 movie which gets more installments in 86’ and 88’ but trust me when I say you’ll find off-the-script stuff much more spine-chilling. You’ve got this cast and crew fighting off the imaginary dark forces on the set but the paranormal somehow bled off the script. We’re talking about tragedies, freak accidents, and an ongoing chain of events that’s just plain ominous. From the innocent charm of Heather O’Rourke to the heartbreaking fate of Dominique Dunne, it’s like the ghosts had it out for anyone who dared to step foot into the world of ‘Poltergeist.’ The eerie coincidences of the tragic fate of almost every cast member make you question reality.

1. Dominique Dunne
Let me tell you the tale of Dominique Dunne, the girl who brought Dana Freeling to life in ‘Poltergeist’. She didn’t just face horrors on the screen—she lived through her own real-life nightmare. In a sickening turn of events, Dominique’s story ended in tragedy at the hands of domestic violence. She was choked to death by the same hands that were supposed to keep her safe. Dunne was just 22 years old when the ink stained the story of her life for the last time. While unrelated to ghostly spirits it was still a tragedy and the first one of many to come. This was just the beginning of the darkness that seemed to follow anyone touched by the cursed ‘Poltergeist’ production.
2. Heather O’Rourke
Next up we have Heather O’Rourke, aka the adorable little Carol Anne from ‘Poltergeist.’ You know, the girl who made us all afraid of our TV sets? Yeah, that one. Poor Heather faced her own silent assailant, but it wasn’t some creepy ghost—it was illness. Turns out, she had this misdiagnosis of Crohn’s disease, but it was actually a bowel obstruction that led to septic shock. Scary stuff, right? And to make matters worse, her symptoms were mistaken for the flu, so she didn’t get the treatment she needed right away. At just 12 years old, she left us way too soon because of this tragic mix-up.
Now, here’s the spooky part, Carol Anne, her character, was like a magnet for all the spirits and demons in the ‘Poltergeist’ movies. It’s like they couldn’t resist messing with her, on-screen and off. Even though she wasn’t the first to pass away from the franchise, her sudden death had everyone questioning if there really was a curse lurking behind the scenes. At least enough to make you want to double-check your symptoms next time you feel under the weather, that’s for sure.
3. Julian Beck
Beck was the guy who gave us all the creeps as the preacher Kane in ‘Poltergeist II: The Other Side.’ Behind that spooky facade was a man fighting his own battle, but not with ghosts or ghouls—nope, they do dirty work by hand. Beck was battling humanity’s humble meter–cancer. His struggle with the incurable condition mirrored the whole existential crisis thing we saw in the movie. He eventually met his maker at 60, just like his character. Now all these seem like natural deaths to a plain eye but three names down from one cast panel of a horror movie franchise, doesn’t that give you chills? Julian Beck was another casualty in the cursed saga of ‘Poltergeist.’

4. Richard Lawson
So, Richard Lawson, our guy from the original ‘Poltergeist,’ lived the best party tale Hollywood couldn’t have made up for him. It was 1992, and Lawson boarded flight 405 to Cleveland. Now, when something shadowy is lurking in the light, you feel it in your gut. That’s what the passengers of 405 felt. Little did they know why. The celebrity status of Lawson got him the ticket to live out the rest of his life when a fangirl flight attendant moved him to first class.
Because get this—the plane crashes into a bay after a failed takeoff, trapping everyone in their seats. And guess who was supposed to be sitting in the row where a passenger tragically lost his life? Yep, it would’ve been Richard if he hadn’t been bumped up. It’s like the good spirits were looking out for him. Another close call in the cursed ‘Poltergeist’ trail.
5. Lou Perryman
So, Lou Perryman might not have been a leading man in ‘Poltergeist,’ but he still found himself tangled up in the cursed web of the franchise. The roof cracked up in 2009 when Seth Christopher Tatum, who was apparently on the run from the law, decided to make Lou Perryman’s home his target. And what does he do there? He attacks poor Lou with an axe. Tatum later turns himself in, claiming he just needed Lou’s car and some other stuff from his house but if that axe had fumbled just an inch, the story would’ve been different.
6. Oliver Robins
Oliver Robins, the middle Freeling child Robbie also had his share of creepy encounters on set. In a scene where Rob is supposed to be wrestling with a mechanical clown, the picture turns terrifying when the clown decides to go off-script and starts choking him for real. Now, here’s where it gets even crazier because the scene was meant to look like a struggle and that’s exactly what Rob was doing, nobody even realized that his O2 was being cut off for real. They really thought he was selling the acting, but then our boy starts turning blue, and finally the right kind of panic sets in. Thankfully, Oliver survives the attack and lives to tell the tale.
7. Will Sampson
Will Sampson, the guy who brought the mystical shaman Taylor to life in ‘Poltergeist II,’ struggled with an illness uncured by the supernatural showdown. Even though he was a shaman only in pretend he did perform an exorcism after the multiple complaints of uneasiness among the crew.
Will suffered from a degenerative condition known as scleroderma. The disease turned him to skin and bones as it ate away at his body. The malnourishment caused by scleroderma became the ultimate reason for his death after a lung transplant surgery. While you can peg this death unrelated from the curse just like you can with all the rest of this list, the point to be noted here is that all these people have one thing in common – ‘Poltergeist’.
8. JoBeth Williams
JoBeth Williams was the heart and soul of the ‘Poltergeist’ series as Diane Freeling but she got more than she bargained for when she signed up for those movies. She was used to playing mates with spirits in front of the camera but it was like the ghosts decided to stick around even Off-screen too. They followed her home playing tricks like they were auditioning for a movie of their own. Jo felt like she couldn’t escape the eerie vibes, because when she would enter her hallway all her pictures would often be tilted at an odd, chilling angle. Jo famously delivered a mindblowing scene with a real human skeleton in the movie which in itself pays a lot to the ‘Poltergeist Curse’ theory.
Now, the credits of this movie have already rolled up and you have a platter of creepy tales to pick apart. After you’re done analyzing you can decide how you wanna see this trail of tragedies – coincidence or cosmic conspiracy.
